Long Thread to read throught it all.
This is not really all that hard I would say easier than Thirsty River. The best Strat is to when you cleared the compound is to stay with the King and do have a Ranger or 2 trapping the the place stay close together not scatter all around the place fighting the Musraat and Jades as well as the White Mantle.I would forget about the bonus don't light the beacons more Musraat will come.I did it 2 times with my Monk and Warrior and had bad pugs with my Ranger as it took 13 times.Missions and Henchies and I don't do well together so I do have to use pugs unfortunatly.

i am pretty angry with this mission right now...
I have done it with my warrior sucessfully. I have a necro and a ranger at this mission. I just speant 4 hours on my ranger attempting this mission. what i notice is that every single time people dont listen!!!
I saw someone in town posting 'paying 14k (2k per person) to a group that can get me through this mission'

Do it with henchies... might fail first time, perhaps even second, but on the third you'll get it right.

I was like you when it came to my Ranger doing it for 13 times but that is what it took for a good arganized team. The missions should be done mostly with reall ppl now especially with Factions coming out. This most are failing this mission is all the running around that going and no one knows how to doa mission proberply anymore.I am now seeing level 4 at Ice Caves and 16 at Iron Mines.Don't pay someone unlesss they do the whole mission for you.

I beat this once upon a time, and was helping another guildie through it, repeatedly, and with no success. Then finally, we got a good group and beat it.
I think one of the variables is during the protect the keep part, toward the end, you wind up with a Mursaat boss on the bloody stairs. If it's an ele, you're golden. If it's the monk, it's really tough. Make sure you've got a couple of people who can interrupt spells, cause he heals like a mofo.
I hated this mission, too, but now want to go back and really see if I can find a decent strategy. It shouldn't be the bane of our existence. Some people seem to have a great touch with it. Patience. Good Group that listens. Endurance. And the willingness to try one more time until you get through it.

This mission can kiss my ass lol. I finally beat it! I bought the game back in May 05 and got all my characters to THK. But I spent time farming, helping friends and what not... never really tried to beat the mission. I gave it a few tries but never succeeded. My ele who was all the way to THK, I deleted her and made a Mesmer/Ele. Well next thing I knew there I was back at THK... so I gave it another shot. 10 more actually before I finally beat the mission.
If it wasn't people not listening and dying because the monk was not nearby, people breaking their mouse. Even on a few occations had people help get to the first fort to clear and then just stand there. They wouldn't drop, they never went afk... probably wanted a free ride. My bad luck also included monks dropping from the game and very evil bad spawns at the cutscene.
So I tried again last night. Got into a group with two monks, a couple warriors and a Necro. I had my mesmer and I think we had an Ele as well. This group kicked so much ass... it was amazing. The necro rose up a huge minion army, the monks healed us and them. When we got to the cutscene, we all agreed to skip it to keep the minions alive. The one necro and monk camped the one gate, a few of us ran back and forth, manning the balistas and helping the warriors and monk at the other gate. When the mursaat arrived, we camped out near the King. Took out those Mursaat one after the other. When the last boss arrived, the mantle one... he didn't have a chance. We were all fired up, no one had dropped or died. For the most part people had listened very well. We did it. It was the most awsome feeling.
My advice is this... its a tough mission yes. But it can be done. People who listen or can help you complete the mission have done it before. People who have never done the mission before do not realise how important it is to camp near your monk, stay together and don't aggro everything in sight. It can be an easy mission if people follow orders and just do the best they can. If anyone needs help. I'm more then happy to try and help.

I am thinking of doing this. I have completed it once and that was with myself and 2 members of our guild, the rest were other people who were willing to listen. We got it with no problems.
I personally think the mission before it (iron mines) is extremly easy, I love how it goes from very easy to near impossible

I got mission stuck there for some month too.. and only recentlly beat it...
Can someone write a Catpult strategy guild that detail when and where will the enemy be coming from? This will be very helpful to a player with only hench...
My stategy (thought I have not try it) would be to split your gorup into two, with two person just controling the catapult and the other hold two lines just infront of the catapult fireing range, the to keep the mob in it, and fire away. Anyone want to try that?

The thing to remember about the Balistas is that they do not kill with the first hit. This is not like Fort Ranik and the Charr. Those Mursaat can withstand about 3-4 direct hits. Trick is to watch those dark patches outside the walls on your maps. Thats where the Balista lands. Most times from my experience, the enemy goes around those spots or stands outside of it. Thats fine, hit them anyway, they will take damage. Some will foolishly stand just out of that area and let you kill them in 4-5 shots. There can be no writen proven rule as every time I attempted the mission... the spawn of mantle, herders, enslaved giants and mursaat was different in numbers and stratagy.
I recommend mesmers and eles to use the balistas. that way those who survive and come for the gates can be killed while you stand out of range on the bridge above when they are being stopped at the gate by the rest of your party. Use the gate to bottle neck them in for those fire spells. I've had the enemy come to the east gate, then at the last minute turn and run all the way around to the west.
Some people talk of a gate bug also were if you don't attack the boss in the middle of the courtyard, you can get outside before the cutscene and kill everything. I have yet to test that. Was going to last night but someone agrro'd the boss. We still beat the mission anyway.
Now that hench are infused, if you get an ok spawn after the cutscene, I don't see how with hench it could be all that difficult. I did try it with hench... got a horrible spawn of herders and enslaved giants... we died before the mursaat even arrived lol.

The Key
The key to this mission is a team that listens and works together. After month of trying, we finally completed ThK. We had one person on each Cat, then the rest camped the king. When the baddies got inside the cat people joined the rest of the team at the top. Dont split the team and take your time, it can be done.
If you get a team that goofs off and will not listen, stop and try to get everyone on the same page, or kill the mission.
I am a E/N using Air primary.

The gate hack was fixed last year sometime, so you won't get off that easy.
I completed the Keep twice over the weekend, once with my Ranger and once with my monk. Ranger needed it; Monk was helping a friend.
My record so far:
Warrior: 2-20
Monk: 4-3
Ranger: 1-0 (Interrupts for the win!!)
Ugh, getting into a good group with a warrior is hard if you don't have guildies handy. Of course, being a Monk means you get 1500 blind invites per minute, but no surprise there. The good thing about being a Monk is that you form your own team, pick who you want, ask the right questions to make sure everybody's on the same page. Setting foot in THK with a monk primary is guaranteed to give you a god complex.
I've never beaten THK with camping the king; all my successes have been with split teams. Communication is important if you split, though. So it has its ups and downs. One of these days I'm gonna try the torch trick and tank all the aggro while the rest of the team picks off the baddies. I think running a nonstop Dolyak Signet would work wonders.

I'll say it again, just as everyone else has: This mission is easy if people LISTEN and work TOGETHER.
The same people that have tons of trouble with it are the same ones who don't follow orders from those who have been there before you.

My thoughts on THK:
I dont understand why its so hard. I keep reading about communication and organization but doesnt that ruin any group? The first time I did THK it was a sinch. No SS or anything. I did it again just to see if it was the PUG that was just good but again, no problems. Maybe one day I'll see what's so hard about this mission in particular.
